Susan “Susie” Marie McKinsey

Susan “Susie” Marie McKinsey was born October 20, 1956, in Des Moines Iowa to Garvin and Susie Peterson. The 4th of 5 children Susie grew up surrounded by family, and from an early age found her passion for caring for others. After many years of playing mother hen to her siblings and graduating from Roosevelt High School, Susie went on to DMACC to become a Certified Medical Assistant.

Susie met the love of her life David. when they were children. It wasn’t until many years later, however, that the two finally married and settled into life with David’s 2 children whom Susie soon adopted. Susie’s love of children and caring for others led her and David to become foster parents. A great many children passed through their home over the years. Susie and David went on to adopt 5 of those children that came to them through the foster system making them a family of 9. Susie worked in a number of nursing homes, but her love of kids had her leaving that profession and opening her own in-home day care which she operated for more than 20 years.

Susie had a great love of music, especially country music. She could often be found attending live shows when she was able. On occasion, one might even find her up on stage as well, singing with the band.

By far, the greatest joy of her life was her family. Her children, then later her grandchildren and great grandchildren were the center of her world. Even though she struggled with a number of health issues the last few years, she would always find time for her family.

Susie passed away quietly at her home in Carroll Iowa on Sunday August 24, 2025. She was preceded in death by her parents Garvin and Susie Peterson, her beloved husband David, and her sisters Kay and Sherry.

She is survived by her 7 children Christi, Christopher, Traci (Chad), Brian, Kaleb, Joseph and Kyle (Cristina), as well as her brothers Greg and Gary, and a small army of grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Visitation will be held for Susie on Monday, September 8th from 9 to 11 am with a celebration of life beginning at 11.  All at the Merle Hay Chapel, with burial to follow at the Chapel Hill Gardens Cemetery.
