Steven Dean Moberg was born July 5th, 1957, in Des Moines, Iowa to Dean and Marilyn (Robinson) Moberg. He was the first of three adopted children by Dean (music teacher) and Marilyn (student/Insurance) with sister, Julie (Cartwright), and son, Matthew to follow in the next several years. They moved throughout Iowa, beginning in Scranton, Fort Dodge, Ames, Leon, then in 1971 moved to Des Moines. Summers included family camping trips with uncles, aunts, and cousins at various Iowa lakes. Steve attended Harding Junior High and North High School (class of 1975) where he was a fierce wrestler under the Coaching of Ted Tuinstra. Conference and District titles were won and finished 4th in the 1975 State Meet at 112lbs. His popularity as an athlete and great friend to everyone was something to witness! He went to Morningside College on a wrestling scholarship and worked at Wilson Packing in Sioux City during the summers. While at Morningside he was a member of a college fraternity that he maintained close ties with until his passing. Steve developed his interest in rock music at an early age. Starting with the Beatles, Steve soon found his "groove" in music taste, becoming a huge fan of The Rolling Stones, The Doors, and Alice Cooper. In 1986 he began writing to a "pen pal" through Rolling Stone magazine, a young woman in Honduras, named "Maria". He promptly began learning Spanish by listening to language cassette tapes in his car on the way to and from work. In the late fall of 1987 Steve flew to Honduras to meet Maria and they were soon married. Due to politics, a war, and the burning down of the U.S. Embassy in Honduras, Maria could not travel to the U.S. until Steve contacted a local news personality (Allison Gregory-Pope) who put Steve in contact with Iowa Senator Tom Harkin who secured Maria's travel to the U.S. in 1988. They welcomed their son, Dean, into the world on September 23, 1991. Steve worked for Central Tractor and Des Moines Bolt before joining forces with his neighbor, Matt Storms, and opened "Red Rooster Records", a vinyl record store in the Highland Park area. A few years later Steve opened his own store across the street in the old Highland Park Post Office called "Uncle Mo's Records" that he maintained for many years. Many famous musicians in town for concerts would stop by to shop and talk! His reputation in the vinyl record business was big! His brother, Matt, ran into a D.J. in Saint Ansgar, Iowa who knew him and sang his praises as a fellow record seller/collector and as a person! According to him Steve was well respected in the vinyl record business!
Steve passed away Thursday, February 5th, 2026, the day after a 10-hour surgery at Methodist Hospital to restore artery function to his left leg, at the age of 68.
Steve is survived by his loving wife, Maria, son, Dean, sister Julie (Jeff) Cartwright, and brother, Matthew (Carol) Moberg; nephews Jacob Keese, and Eric Keese, cousins Tom (Jackie) Moberg, Buck (Stephanie) Dopp, Sheila Dopp, Stanley Moberg, Bradley Moberg, Linda Rich and Blake Moberg.
