Nettie Brown, 77, passed away in the comfort of her home, after a battle with Alzheimer’s and Dementia, on Tuesday, November 10, 2020.
Nettie Marie Newbrough was born to Floyd and Opal (Freel) Newbrough on October 2, 1943, in Boone, Iowa. Nettie attended many schools growing up and she graduated from the Colo Community School District.
Nettie was united in marriage to Donald Akes in November of ‘66 and they were blessed with two children, John Paul and Katheryn Sue. Donald and Nettie divorced and Nettie remarried Philip Brown in February of ‘76. Philip and Nettie made their forever home in Des Moines.
Nettie worked at Central Life Insurance and retired after 20 plus years of faithful service. She then worked many years for the Des Moines Schools as a lunch attendant.
She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star-Chapter 417 and a longtime member of Epworth United Methodist Church, Des Moines.
Nettie enjoyed scrapbooking, thimble collecting, playing cards, working on puzzles, watching Lawrence Welk, cuddling with her cats, traveling - to all 50 states, and most of all, spending time with her family and friends.
Left to cherish her memory are her children, John Paul Akes and Katheryn “Kathy” Sue Harrington, both of Des Moines, four step-children, her grandchildren, Jasmine Tyler (Chad), Aylissa Tyler (Marshawn), Shauna Tyler (Aaron), and Jonathan David “JD” Akes, 4 step-grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Rylie, Taylin and Rowen as well as many family members and friends.
In death, Nettie rejoins her parents, Floyd and Opal Newbrough,
husband, Philip Brown, and other extended family members.
