Martha Darlene Grosz

Martha was born on May 29, 1954, in Leon IA growing up in Corydon, Iowa on her family’s farm. Martha went to Wayne Community schools and then on to Graceland College to receive her Nursing Degree and was the salutatorian of her class. She went to work at the Veterans Administration Medical Center is Des Moines, Iowa where she was the head nurse of a cardiology unit. Martha also worked at Des Moines Methodist Hospital on their cancer floor before going on to do 19 years of helping her patients through kidney dialysis. She then went on to home health nursing for several years.


Martha was an extremely competent and compassionate nurse who strived to give the best care to every single patient regardless of their affliction. While working at Iowa Home Care, Martha received the Mother Theresa Award for her work as a nurse, taking care of her homebound patients. It was awarded to her by the then Lieutenant Governor, Kim Reynolds.


Martha was proceeded in death by her parents, Darl and Georgia Ruble. She is survived by her husband of over 44 years, William, sons Christopher and Benjamin (Ashley), 7 grandchildren; William, Tyson, Grace, Brayden, Ryland, Gabe and Evelynn, her brother Marshall (Patricia) Ruble, and several nieces, nephews, and cousins whom she loved very much.


Martha died on October 8th, 2022, after a 9-month battle with Acute Myeloid Leukemia and complications of kidney failure. She wanted any donations to be made to the American Cancer Society. [see below for mailing option]


On Friday, October 14 there will be a visitation held at 9:00-11:00am with a service to follow at Sunset Memorial Chapel (7601 Fleur Dr.). After the service, there will be a luncheon gathering at 12:00pm to further honor and commemorate Martha’s life. Martha will be resting at Merle Hay Funeral Home – Mausoleum.
