Marguerite Harris passed away peacefully at home on October 24, 2025. She was 97 years old.
Born an only child on August 8, 1928, to Mrs. Lorena Haggerty in Utica, New York, Marguerite grew up in Iowa. While attending North High School, she met and fell in love with Robert Harris. They married in November of 1946, shortly after he joined the United States Marine Corps. Together, they raised four children while navigating the joys and challenges of military life before finally settling down in Urbandale, where they built a home filled with love and laughter.
Marguerite lived life to the fullest. She and Bob traveled extensively, with Hawaii holding a special place in their hearts. She enjoyed golfing, reading, and spending time with her ladies’ groups, where friendship and laughter were abundant. Above all, she cherished time with her family, sharing stories and reflecting on how truly rich she was in life, love, and experience.
Fiercely independent, delightfully opinionated, and blessed with a quick wit, Marguerite could always surprise those around her with a sharp remark or a heartfelt truth. She took great pride in her marriage to Bob — a loving partnership of nearly 79 years built on trust, respect, hard work, and enduring love.
To those who knew her, Marguerite was a pillar of strength, beauty, and grace. Her four children were her proudest achievement, and she loved them deeply. She was a devoted wife, an adoring mother, a wonderful grandmother, and a loyal friend. Her warmth, humor, and steadfast love will be remembered always by everyone who had the honor of knowing her.
In addition to her beloved husband, Marguerite is survived by her three children, Debra Riley, Roger Harris, and Keith (Elsa) Harris. She was preceded in death by her eldest daughter, Cathy Marasco, in April 2024. Her legacy continues through her seven grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandson.
The family wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate nurses from EveryStep Hospice for their exceptional care and kindness.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, October 30, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. at Merle Hay Chapel, 4400 Merle Hay Road, Des Moines. A funeral service will follow at 11:00 a.m., with burial at Chapel Hill Cemetery. Please join the family for fellowship and a luncheon after the services today.
“Those we love never truly leave us; their memory lives on in the kindness they’ve shared and the love they’ve given.”
