Updated: Jul 6, 2023

Llewellyn “Lew” Scott, the son of Walter and Grace Scott, was born on April 25, 1948 in Marianna, Arkansas. He was the third of six children. He was preceded in death by his loving parents and only brother Larry.

Lew was baptized at an early age and became a member of the New Bethel Baptist Church.

He was educated in the Marianna Public Schools and graduated from Moton High School. Lew attended Northwestern Oklahoma State University in Alva, Oklahoma on a basketball scholarship. He majored in Physical Education.

After college, Llewellyn moved to Des Moines, Iowa. He was employed at Kraft Foods, JC Penney, and many years later retired from Sears, Roebuck & Company.

Llewellyn loved his family and we loved him dearly. In addition, he liked sports, listening to music, grilling, and telling jokes. His hobbies were fishing and playing billiards (for fun and competitively).

He leaves to cherish his memory: his life partner Connie Kelley, West Des Moines, IA, two sons, Kornell Shabazz (Lawry), Oklahoma City, OK, Barton Scott, Thomson, IL and a daughter, Joanna Doherty (Bryan), Cottage Grove, MN; four sisters, Peggy Whitaker (William), Des Moines, IA, Diana Scott (Kunta), Conway, SC, Arleen Scott, DeSoto, TX and Rose Scott (Eddie), Des Moines, IA, sister-in-law, Deatra Scott (Larry), Detroit, MI, five grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who shall miss him tremendously.

There will be a Celebration of Life to remember Lew on Saturday, July 15th from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM at Merle Hay Funeral Home (4400 Merle Hay Rd., Des Moines, IA 50310).
