Leslie E. Barber

Leslie E. Barber, 65, of Des Moines, Iowa, passed away peacefully at home on September 24, 2025.

Les was born on June 21, 1960, in Chicago, Illinois. He proudly served in the U.S. Navy, where he worked as a cook and on airplanes. Following his service, Les pursued his lifelong passion for food, becoming a chef for more than 26 years after attending culinary school in New York. He was also an ordained minister.

Les enjoyed the simple joys of life—watching sports, fishing, and singing karaoke. He was known for his big heart, his love of laughter, and the way he made everyone around him feel like family.

He is survived by his sister, Robin Hohl, and nieces Peach Wise, Tammy McCullough, and Jane McCullough, along with many other loving nieces, nephews, extended family members, and countless friends who will deeply miss him. He is also remembered by his best friend, Donald L. Drake II. Les was preceded in death by his father, John E. Miller Sr., who now welcomes him home.

A Celebration of Life will be held in November 2025. Details will be shared with family and friends at a later date.

Leslie’s favorite saying was, “Never say ‘Goodbye,’ but ‘See you later.’”

Those who wish to share stories or photos of Les are encouraged to do so, as his memory lives on through the love and laughter he brought to others.
