Larry Myron Chiles

Larry Myron Chiles, 83, of Urbandale, was called home to be with the Lord on Friday, October 15, 2021 at his home surrounded by family. He was born July 18, 1938 to Earl & Esther (Morris) Chiles. Larry grew up in Knoxville with his parents and 4 siblings.

The world lost a great man! The kind that are rare and hard to find. Larry was a devoted family man, kind, hard-working and classy. He came from very humble beginnings and overcame them to achieve a full life of love and happiness. At 83 years of age his mind was sharp, he was a great driver, and he still worked part-time driving an armored truck.

After graduating from Knoxville High School in 1956 he decided to go into the Air Force. Larry was stationed in Plattsburg, New York at a Strategic Air Command Base. Following his service, Larry worked for Anderson Erickson Dairy and retired after 41 years. He started out delivering AE milk door to door and in the end was driving a semi truck doing drop shipment delivery. After a short break he worked 5 years for Mid States Ford delivering auto parts. Afterward, Larry worked part-time for Rochester Armored Car Company for 13 years until his recent hospitalization. Larry’s motto was to “Work Hard & Play Hard”….. it served him very well throughout his life.

Larry loved anything that involved spending time with his kids, grandkids and friends. He was a huge Hawkeye fan, enjoyed traveling to new places, attending grandchildren’s activities, and making memories. He was known for being loving, caring, honest, supportive with words of encouragement and had wisdom to share. Larry was generous beyond measure and was the “rock” of his family. He will be greatly missed and his absence leaves a hole in many hearts.

Those left to cherish Larry’s memory include his children: Victoria Clemons of Urbandale, Iowa, Gary (Beth) Chiles of Waco, Texas, Hollie (John) Brophy of Des Moines, Iowa and Brad (Jenny) Chiles of Altoona, Iowa; grandchildren: Shannon (Kristin) Brown, Skye (Haley) Messerli, Sheena (Nathan) Lester, Lily Chiles, Leland Chiles, MaKayla Brophy, Colton Brophy, MaKenna Brophy, Bradley Jr. Chiles, Rylan Chiles, Jade Foster, Jake Foster, Jack Foster; 16 great-grandchildren; brother, Phillip Chiles, and sisters Loretta (Dennis) Phillips, Patty (Hank) Geery, Jeanne Kabello; ex-wife Gigi Chiles; and his truest friends, Ron & Karen Fee. Larry was preceded in death by his parents and ex-wife Sharon Cunningham.

Visitation will begin at 10 a.m., on Friday, October 22 at Merle Hay Funeral Home. His funeral will follow at 11 a.m. Feel free to wear Hawkeye clothing or Black/Gold colors
