With deep sorrow, we announce the passing of Reverend Jonas Gitsibo Muhizi, who left us on December 14, 2024, at Methodist Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa. He was born on December 1, 1960, in Runundu, Democratic Republic of the Congo, to the late Yohana Sebwiyungure and Roda Nyabakanura.
Jonas' faith journey began early, as he was baptized at the Church of CEPAC. His spiritual commitment grew as he embraced a calling to serve the Lord. He became a Reverend for the Church of Bethlehem and dedicated his life to pastoral ministry. On January 15, 2017, he began his duties as a Reverend Pastor, shepherding his congregation with unwavering devotion and compassion. Reverend Muhizi was a beloved pastor at Redeemed Fellowship Center in Urbandale, Iowa, where he continued to serve until his passing.
Jonas leaves behind his devoted wife, Chantal Narukundo, and their 12 children—6 sons and 6 daughters. He was a proud grandfather of 12 grandchildren, whose lives he enriched with love and wisdom. He is also survived by 2 brothers and 2 sisters, who will deeply miss him.
Reverend Jonas Gitsibo Muhizi is preceded in death by his father, Yohana Sebwiyungure, his mother, Roda Nyabakanura, as well as a brother and a sister.
Visitation will be Friday, December 20, 2024, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Merle Hay Chapel, 4400 Merle Hay Road, Des Moines, Iowa. A service to honor his life and legacy will be held at Shalom Covenant Church, 7605 NW Aurora Avenue, Urbandale, Iowa, 50322, on Saturday, December 21, 2024, at 10:00 AM. The service will be officiated by Pastor Christophe Nshoreyingabo.
Reverend Jonas Gitsibo Muhizi’s memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. He was a faithful servant of the Lord, a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend. His presence in our lives left an indelible mark, and we will always remember the kindness, strength, and wisdom he shared. A void is left in our hearts, but we take comfort in knowing that we will see him again.
Until then, we will carry his love and legacy with us. We loved you so much, Reverend Jonas. Rest in peace.
