Howard “Sonny” Thompson, beloved son of Loren and Vera Thompson, was born on February 6, 1940, at Broadlawns Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa. He passed peacefully from this life on Friday, June 19, 2026, at Orilla’s Way in Grant City, Missouri, surrounded by the care and friendship of those who loved him.
Howard spent most of his 86 years in and around the Des Moines neighborhood affectionately known as “Dog Patch,” a place that shaped his character, his humor, and his deep appreciation for community. After graduating from Johnston High School on May 27, 1958, he proudly enlisted in the United States Marine Corps on July 4, 1958. He served his country with honor until May 4, 1964, when he was discharged with the rank of Lance Corporal. His years in the Marines remained a defining source of pride throughout his life.
Following his military service, Howard went to work as a welder for Pioneer, where he dedicated himself to his craft until his retirement. He was a man who loved working with his hands, fixing, building, and creating — always ready to lend his skills to anyone who needed help.
Howard’s life was rich with simple joys and meaningful connections. He was generous, funny, caring, forgiving, helpful, happy, and kind — qualities that made him instantly likable and deeply cherished. He loved the outdoors, especially boating, fishing, and camping. He enjoyed tackling projects and took pleasure in seeing what he could make or repair. Howard also found great joy in soccer, coaching his children’s teams and even playing on an adult team himself. He had a gift for making friends wherever he went, and his easy smile and warm spirit left a lasting impression on everyone he met.
Howard leaves to cherish his memory his loving children: Randy (Jayne) Thompson of Waverly, KS; Deb (Eric) Drake of Blockton, IA; Tracey (Jason Walrod) Johnson of Peoria, AZ; Steven (Michelle) Thompson of Logan, IA; Robin (Sean) Hallinan of West Des Moines, IA.
He is also survived by 13 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren, along with many nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family members who will forever hold him close in their hearts.
Howard will be greatly missed by his family, including his sister Bonnie Sorenson of Glendale, AZ, his niece Jodi (Jose) Valencia-Quezada of Des Moines, IA, and his “friend family” at Orilla’s Way, who provided companionship, comfort, and joy in his final years.
Howard “Sonny” Thompson lived a life defined by kindness, service, and love. His legacy endures in the laughter he inspired, the friendships he nurtured, and the family he adored. Those who knew him will carry his memory forward with gratitude for the time they shared and the lessons he quietly taught — to be generous, to be joyful, and to always make room for others.
