Updated: Jan 24

Charles W. Michelson, 85, passed away on Saturday, January 18, 2025.

Charles was born on March 19, 1939, in St. Paul, MN to Charles A. and Annis (Paladie).  He served in the U.S. Navy from 1958 to 1962 and was stationed over in the Philippines.  Upon returning from the Navy, he worked at Red Owl grocery store and studied court reporting at Northern Technical School of Business in MN.

On September 29, 1961, he met his beloved wife, Wanda.  Upon graduating he spent two years as a court reporter in Williston, ND.  After serving 37 years with the Iowa District Court, he decided to retire in 2005.  After retiring he worked part time at Hobby Lobby for 10 years and then volunteered at the Urbandale Food Pantry.  He loved to cook and grill out for friends and family, enjoyed spending his time outside tending to the flower beds, fishing, watching shows on real crime, reading, and listening to music with his grandchildren.  He donated five gallons of blood, making sure to take care of those in the community.

Charles was a man who seemed to know someone no matter where he went.  He could strike up a conversation with anyone anywhere.  He had many friends and co-workers who liked and respected him not only for his work ethic but for the kindness he had for each and every one of them.  He shared many stories of helping others in need while working in downtown Des Moines.

Charles is survived by his wife Wanda of 61 years; sons Brian (Teri Veik), Brent (Ann Jansen); daughter Brenda (Mike Juergens); six grandchildren and six great grandchildren; sister Janeth (Jerry Miller).

He was preceded in death by his mother, Annis; father, Charles A.; stepmother, Lorayne; sister, Jean (Sparky); sister, Judy.

We loved him very much and will miss his support, kindness, and love.

A memorial service is to be determined.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to any charity of your choice in his name.
