Barry Mertes

Barry Mertes, 65, of Des Moines, Iowa passed away Saturday afternoon, December 5, 2020, at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa from complications of Covid-19.


Barry Joseph Mertes was born on September 12, 1955 in Newton, Iowa; he was the son of Bernard and Ruby (Andersen) Mertes. He attended school in Des Moines and graduated from Dowling High School in 1974. Barry was a Vietnam Veteran and served in the United States Army. He was united in marriage to Linda Davidson on August 23, 1980 at the Bondurant Christian Church. Barry and Linda made Des Moines their home where they raised their family and Barry worked for the Post Office. He was a member of the VFW and Adventure Life Church in Altoona. He enjoyed doing word searches, traveling, watching golf, the 49ers, and his St Louis Cardinals. His most important role was being Papa to his grandchildren. He lived his life with the motto that family is everything and his legacy will live on in us; his family.


Left to cherish his memory is his wife of 40 years, Linda, children, Charlie (Tally) Mertes of Omaha,NE, Brian (Jenny) Mertes, of Mt Vernon, IA, Jason(Tracy) Mertes of Urbandale, IA, Amy(Keith) Tilton of Carlisle, IA, Kyle Mertes of Des Moines,IA, and John(Ashley) Mertes of Carlisle, IA , grandchildren, Tyler, Colton, Camden, Hugh, Graysanne, Logan, Travis, Tyler, Ian and Luke.

In death Barry rejoins his parents, Bernard and Ruby Mertes, and sister, Angie Mertes.


Visitation will be on Wednesday, December 9, 2020 from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. at Adventure Life Reformed Church, 1700 8th Street SW, Altoona, Iowa, 50009. (PLEASE NOTE FRIDAY) Funeral services will be held on Friday, December 11, 2020 at 10:00 a.m. also at the Church. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic mask and social distancing are required! after the service we will be traveling to Adair, Iowa for the committal with Military Honors.
